A contingent of RCMP investigators are on-scene in Fort St. James examining the contents of a vacant house on Lower Road.
Police are being tight-lipped about what it is that caught their interest, describing it only as "suspicious findings," but promised more information would be forthcoming once some undisclosed verifications were made.
"Fort St. James members responded to some information, initially," provincial RCMP spokesman Sgt. Rob Vermeulen told The Citizen. "When they arrived, and saw what they saw, it was felt a full scene assessment should take place. That is a very painstaking process, sometimes."
When asked what indications existed at the scene - bodily remains? drugs? money? stolen goods? art or writings? weapons? - Vermeulen would not disclose even the category of crime that might be involved.
He said this was out of sensitivity to various past incidents, most or all of which won't end up pertaining to this scene.
"We are aware that there are a number of ongoing investigations in the area, but it would be irresponsible for anyone to jump to any conclusions or make any connections until investigators have had a chance to properly and thoroughly assess and document the scene", he said.
The investigation is being led by the Fort St. James detachment, with help from the Major Crime Unit based at North District headquarters in Prince George.
