Over 50 eager Grade 6 and 7 students have volunteered to be a part of the various leadership teams at cole College Heights Elementary, which include morning announcers, recycling, assembly set-up and hosting, technology, athletic, office, lunch monitors and special events. The enthusiasm of these students is contagious, and their willingness to take on the different roles around the school plays a huge part is making our school the great place that it is.
This week, a special performance by Les Bcherons brought Canada's past to life through song, story, and dance all from a French-Canadian perspective.
Intermediate students are having a ball, volleyball that is. Grade 5/7 students are enjoying intramural volleyball at lunch on Fridays while the grade 6/7 boys have begun praticing their skills, getting ready for the upcoming season.
Lastly, this week Division 26 participated in the Storm Drain Marking Program in affiliation with REAPS and Fisheries and Oceans. Students marked storm drains with bright yellow fish around College Heights to heighten environmental awareness. Pamphlets on how to better care for the environment and our urban waterways were also delivered to houses in the area.

Though this is a four-day school week for SD57, including Ecole Heather Park Elementary's nearly 600 students, it is totally jam-packed with events and activities. On October 16th, students in grades 4-7 enjoyed a Justice Theatre presentation on bullying called "Online Threats" which involved a mock set up of a judge, lawyers and a jury of 12 randomly selected students. The following day, Kindergarten-Grade 3 students were reminded of the importance of knowing fire safety and having escape routes through a special Fire Prevention Assembly -- complete with the Fire House. This was timely as Fire Prevention Week was October 7-13th and the theme this year was: Have 2 Ways Out. As always, there are a myriad of locally sponsored activities to keep students busy on Friday, October 19th's Pro-D day while teachers attend workshops and presentations.

The primary students in Mrs. Maher's and Mrs. Butchart's class of Highglen Montessori will be going to Simon Fraser Lodge this morning. These classes will be attending every other week as part of their intergenerational studies. The students sit at tables with the residents and enjoy making a craft together, engaging in conversation, building relationships, and enjoying a snack. The residents and the kids both enjoy this interaction.
The intermediate students of Mr. Laing's class will be attending next week. These students interact with a sing-song of all the old classics. After singing, there is time for a visit and a snack.
On Thursday, there is a school dance during the day to support the Multiple Sclerosis Society and our Foster Child. Admission is by donation. On behalf of IRA, there will be a DJ & light show by Good Vibrations. Other sponsors are Save-On Foods, Cineplex, Gamescape, Shoppers Drug Mart, D'Lanos, Avon and Exploration Place. The students of Southridge Elementary will be enjoying a concert put on by The Kerplunks on Wednesday October 24. Parents are welcome to attend these cultural events.
Our grade 6/7 boys and girls volletball teams have be hard at work practising. Thank you to teacher and parent sponsors/coaches for their ongoing support.
Our school is pleased to participate in Operation Christmas Child once again. We will be collecting small gift donations as well as cash donations for this important cause.

St. Mary's students raised $3,000 for the Canadian Cancer Association with the Terry Fox Run.
Special thanks to Mr. Tramble for organizing this event.
St. Mary's will be having their first pancake breakfast with all proceeds going to their foster child.
