Spruce Kings training camp opens Friday

Thirty-five players invited; intrasquad game Sunday at 5 p.m. at Kopar Memorial Arena

Training camp starts Friday for the Prince George Spruce Kings.

Thirty-five players invited to camp will gather in the lobby at Kopar Memorial Arena for registration and weigh-ins, then go to X-Conditioning for fitness testing.

The players will be split into two teams, Red and White, for practices Friday afternoon (4 and 5:15 p.m.),  Saturday morning (10 and 11:15 a.m.), Saturday afternoon (4 and 5:15 p.m.) and Sunday morning (10 and 11:15 a.m.).

Team Red and Team White will then square off in an intrasquad game Sunday at 5 p.m., after which the team will make its cuts to get down to 25 players, the maximum allowed in the B.C. Hockey League’s new rules.

The Spruce Kings, under head coach Alex Evin, will play five exhibition games, all on the road, starting Sept. 8 against the Chiefs in Chilliwack. They’ll also play the Rivermen in Langley, Sept. 9.

Then it’s off to Trail for three games, facing the Cranbrook Bucks (Sept. 14), Trail Smoke Eaters (Sept. 15) and Powell River Kings (Sept. 16).

The regular season starts Sept. 23 in Salmon Arm.

Their home-opener at Kopar is set for Friday, Sept. 29, against Chilliwack.
