Spruce City Wildlife Association removes 420kg of garbage near Heather Park

The association has been gifted a new trail cam to help tackle the problem site

Volunteers with Spruce City Wildlife Association (SCWA) removed 420kg of garbage from a site near Heather Park Elementary this weekend as a part of the BackCountry Cleanups Initiative.

SCWA founded the BackCountry Cleanups initiative approximately 5 years ago, designed to remove trash from our trails and backcountry areas in the Prince George region.

“We were shortly joined by our partner, Wood Wheaton Supercentre,” explains Steve Hamilton, SCWA president.  “Since then, we have removed over 50,000lbs of garbage, not including 5 vehicles, countless appliances and recyclables.”

Yesterday (Oct. 10) a few volunteers gathered to clean up a regular dump site next to Heather Park Elementary. “In an hour, we removed 420 kgs of garbage. I did a post on Facebook, advising the community it was cleaned,” says Hamilton, explaining the dumpsite was first reported to SWCA through Facebook and he wanted to keep everyone updated.

“Shortly after, I was contacted by Cassandra Premack of K.K.S Tactical Supplies in Prince George. She stated to me that they wanted to do anything they could to help combat this problem, and immediately offered a trail camera towards this at no charge.”

Hamilton says this is a great value for SCWA and will go a long way to help to tackle the illegal dumping at the site.
