Spring on the Homestead at Huble Historic Site goes May long weekend

Huble Homestead Historic Site offers a glimpse into turn-of-the-century times as they open for the season on May long weekend near Prince George.
Huble Homestead - May Pole
During Huble Homestead Historic Sites' opening event, Spring on the Homestead, people can take part in the May pole dance on May 20 and 21.

If taking a step back into simpler times sounds appealing, plan a visit to Huble Homestead Sunday, May 21 and Monday, May 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It’s the opening weekend of the historic site to help mark the changing season.

Watch or join in the fun, old-fashioned activities such as the May-pole dance. Just grab a ribbon and get ready to learn more about this spring tradition that dates back to the dances ancient people would do in hopes of harvesting a large crop.

Try playing the Game of Graces or borrow one of the kites to see if you can get it off the ground. Find out which vegetables will be planted in the Huble garden this season, and learn about the heritage varieties of potatoes being grown in anticipation of this fall’s Potato Festival, then take part in heritage demonstrations such as butter making and cheesemaking with local expert Tracey Johnson of Cheese Needs.

On Sunday, flex your creative muscles in the scarecrow making contest for a chance to have your entry stay up in the Huble garden all summer long.

Reacquaint yourself with the historic site by taking a guided tour and explore the buildings by taking part in a treasure hunt. Afterwards, relax with a picnic basket brought from home, or buy lunch from the barbecue.

Don’t forget to check out the general store and browse a new selection of locally made goods.

Huble Homestead Historic Site is a turn-of-the-century heritage attraction and is a 30 minute drive north of Prince George. Leave the city behind and make your way up Highway 97 for 40 kilometres, before turning right onto Mitchell Road to continue another six kilometres down a well-maintained gravel road.

Huble Homestead is dog friendly and open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is by donation, with a recommended amount of $10 per family.
