Spend, spend, spend - wages at Prince George City Hall

City records show 209 staff paid in excess of $75,000 in 2009

The top-paid City of Prince George employee's wages have increased 22 per cent in two years, closing in on $200,000 in 2009.

City manager Derek Bates has been the highest-remunerated city employee since 2007, and last year took in a gross sum of $194,262.96. Adding expenses, Bates's total earnings jumped to $204,668.94.

The number of city staff earning more than $100,000 in gross wages has increased from 39 employees in 2008 (translating to 5.2 per cent of staff), to 67 employees (6.8 per cent) in 2009.

"The increase can be almost exclusively attributed to the ratification of the IAFF Collective Agreement, which implemented negotiated wage increases retroactive to Jan. 1, 2007," said Mike Davis, manager, communications and citizen engagement for the city.

"This retroactive payment of wages included all overtime claimed by our fire department employees for three significant events that occurred during that time period, including the Nechako flood, the North Central Plywood fire and the Columbus Hotel fire."

Just less than half of the 67 employees earning more than $100,000 held jobs within the fire department.

Municipalities are required to provide a list of city staff earning $75,000 to the general public under subsection 2(3) of the Financial Information Act, and subsection 4(1) of the Financial Information Regulation.

Staff wages have increased by $5.4 million since 2007, and the number of employees earning $75,000 or more went from 131 in 2007 to 209 in 2009 -- a 60 per cent increase.

Including expenses, there were 26 employees earning more than $100,000 in 2007, compared to the 67 employees in 2009. The number of staff earning between $90,000 and 100,000 went from 28 to 63 in the same two-year period.

Similarly, there were 40 employees taking in $80,000 to 90,000 in 2007, compared to 48 in 2009.
