Meow's the time to adopt a pet cat.

Starting on Saturday and continuing until next Friday, August 2, adult cats will be available for adoption at half the usual charge at all 36 SPCA shelters, including the one in Prince George.

"At this time of year our shelters are always very full, and we have also rescued a large number of cats through cruelty investigations recently, so we'd love to find good homes for as many cats as possible during our half-price event," said BC SPCA spokesperson Lorie Chortyk.

She said many adult cats get overlooked during kitten season, putting a premium on space at the shelters.

"Taking an adult cat home offers many benefits," added Chortyk. "Older cats tend to be calmer and their personalities have developed so it allows us to make the best match with their potential new guardians."

The full adoption fee for an adult cat at North Cariboo SPCA is $120 plus a $45 B.C. Pet Registry registration fee, according to the shelter's website.

Hills Pet Nutrition Canada is sponsoring the campaign.

The Cariboo North SPCA is located at 4011 Lansdowne Rd. and is open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and closed on Sundays and Mondays. The shelter's phone number is 250-562-5511 and its email is [email protected].
