Bottles of grain will be shoveled into the back of a horse trailer, this weekend, minus the grain.
The Prince George Equine Rescue Society is calling on the city to fill up their horse trailer with bottles so they can cash them in for winter feed.
"Our goal is to fill the horse trailer to the roof," said society founder Nicola Redpath. "A big thank you to all who supported last year's Winters Grain Bottle Drive, we raised over a $1,000 in bottles, grain, and monetary donations."
The society members are hoping to surpass that total with this year's second annual event. It offsets the high cost of food for the horses dropped off by the concerned public at their recovery farm in Pineview, or brought to them by the SPCA from seizure situations. The horses are often in poor health; for example the famous two rescued from Mount Renshaw's snows of 2008 were first brought to the PGER farm to recover. Redpath and a team of volunteers nurse them back to health largely on their own time and out of their own pockets, save for donations and fundraisers like this one.
The horse trailer will be set up in front of Greenhawk Harness and Equestrian Supplies (4870 Continental Way, on the north side of the highway through the BCR Industrial Site, just over the east side of the Simon Fraser Bridge) on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
