Monday morning's snowfall saw city clean-up crews hitting the streets for the first time this season.

Sanding and sidewalk clearing equipment were sent out in the morning, said public works director Gina Layte Liston.

Overall, the city's snow-clearing fleet is almost entirely ready to go, Layte Liston said, with city-owned and on-retainer machines in hand and leasing agreements currently underway for two graders and two loaders.

In the meantime, residents are reminded that winter parking restrictions have been in effect since Oct. 15 and will be in place until April 15.

The rules, established via bylaw last year, prohibit overnight parking from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the city's first-priority snow clearing areas - main arterial roads, the hospital district and priority hills. On-street parking in the downtown central business district - bordered by First and 15th Avenues and Vancouver Street and Queensway - is restricted between midnight and 7 a.m.

According to the updated city council snow and ice control procedure, plowing in the first-priority areas is triggered by a 75-millimetre accumulation.

Plowing in all other areas of the city is triggered by about 120mm accumulation of snow.

Sidewalks are plowed when there's more than 50mm of snow on the ground.
