An environmental incident on Highway 16 had Vanderhoof RCMP doing some slick work to clean up the mess.

Vanderhoof RCMP Cpl. Darin Underhill said it happened May 19 between the hours of 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. He described how a vehicle turning off of Dump Road onto the main highway "spilled several buckets of heavy gear oil, leaving a heavy coating of oil on Highway 16."

The non-traction on the pavement caused a significant traffic hazard, he said, while the properties of the oil caused an environmental hazard.

"Crews spent eight to nine hours to clean the highway to a point where it was safe enough for the travelling public to pass," said Underhill.

The people involved in the spill are not yet identified by police. An investigation is underway. If anyone knows who might be responsible for this spill, they are asked to call RCMP investigators at 250-567-2222 or anonymously leave a tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS / www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca.
