Embattled city councillor Brian Skakun's luck has turned for the better.
The names of Skakun and his wife, Nelia, were drawn in the third early-bird draw of the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation's Cash to Fight Cancer lottery on Friday, making them $10,000 richer.
The money will go towards the legal costs he's incurred fighting a charge of breaking privacy legislation by allegedly leaking a report on the conduct of a city manager at the Prince George RCMP detachment to the media.
"I'm grateful and this is a really nice surprise," he said. "Me and my wife and invested a great deal of emotional and financial capital into my court case and this gives us a bit of relief."
The case, which has consumed seven days of court time and will continue in early January, will cost between $30,000 and $40,000 by Skakun's estimation.
Skakun said they bought the ticket to support the Spirit of the North.
"They do a good bunch of work and it was so nice for my wife to get the phone call," he said.
