Six Prince George RCMP volunteer groups recognized for dedication to safer community

Part of annual National Volunteer Appreciation Week

Today (April 24) marks the second-last day of National Volunteer Appreciation Week in Canada.

There are nearly 12.7 million people dedicate themselves to volunteering in community across the country and hundreds of them are in Prince George.

A majority of them lend a helping hand to local police and Mounties are recognizing volunteer efforts in ensuring safety within the community.

“The Prince George RCMP works with several groups of volunteers who are committed to facilitating a safer, more sustainable community through effective programs and services,” reads a Prince George RCMP Community Policing release.

The organization highlights six groups in particular police work with and the valuable services they offer.

  • Citizens on Patrol
    • Patrol the city reporting suspicious activity
    • Provide Speed Watch and distracted driver campaigns
    • Conduct foot patrols
    • Assist at citywide special events
  • Front desk – Community Policing
    • Front-line workers serving witness subpoenas, fielding inquiries and providing customer assistance
  • RCMP Auxiliary members
    • Assist with crime prevention programs and services including special events
    • Provide home security assessments
    • Garage 529 anti-bike theft clinics
  • Restorative Justice Program
    • Work with youth and adult offenders
    • Providing an effective alternative to the criminal justice system with a focus on accountability problem solving and community healing
  • Safety Bear
    • The goodwill ambassador and mascot of the Prince George RCMP
    • Attends special events and city-wide functions with a whimsical approach
  • Victim Services
    • Provide emotional support for victims of crime or trauma
    • Liaise between the victim, Court system, law enforcement and community agencies
    • Provide helpful referral services
