I am seeking re-election for a third term. I am a retired teacher, a mother of three grown children and have five grandchildren.

In my six years as school trustee and 30 years as an elementary and secondary teacher in the district, I have gained extensive experience in education at the school, district, regional and provincial level. I am known for my work as chair of the District Management and Finance committee.

During my two terms as trustee I have been an active member on all board committees and have gained an extensive understanding of the complex operation and educational organization of District 57.

I represent the Northern Interior Branch on the (BCSTA) BC School Trustee Association's Education Committee which I currently chair. I am a member of the BCSTA Legislative committee and represent BCSTA on the BC Teacher Qualification Service.

I pride myself as a team player. I approach all my responsibilities knowing the importance of thoughtful, well informed participation in committee work, at the board table and as a representative of the board in the broader community. I believe the work of the board must be open and transparent and conducted in an atmosphere of respect and trust. All deliberations, discussion and debate must be balanced, reflect thoughtful preparation, and be based on facts and evidence.

Decisions regarding how to spend existing funds for education must be made with the best educational interests of all students. Districts are required to prepare a balanced budget. The challenge is to address an expanding mandate, declining enrolment, and meet the educational needs of each student.

Trustees across the province have called for a review and revision of the current operating fund formula. A review and revision of this formula would help districts be more flexible in funding needed educational programs and services. However, in order to balance expenses with revenues under existing funding, School District 57 has needed to take extreme cost saving measures.

It has had to close schools, reorganize and restructure the district. The new board will need to address rebuilding initiatives within existing educational funding while at the same time advocate for additional funding that addresses the implementation of innovative ideas and new ways of delivering educational opportunities for our students.

The most pressing issue for the new board will be both an opportunity and a challenge.

As we move forward with a changing educational mandate, the challenge will be to continue to provide for the current needs of each student while at the same time implement change initiatives that provide enhanced educational opportunities for all students.

If re-elected I look forward to this challenge and opportunity.
