There's nothing more entertaining than an Idol contest and what could be more fun than Senior Idol as part of the Mardi Gras Snow Daze at the Elder Citizens Recreation Centre on Saturday, Feb. 9?

The second annual Senior Idol will begin at 7 p.m.

Last year there were 10 contestants. It surprised the organizer, Odelia Kranz, to see only three of those competitors were women.

"It seems that the women are just too shy to compete," laughed Kranz.

Top three winners last year were Laurie Meier who impressed everyone with his banjo playing and yodeling talent, Gerry Deboer came second and third place went to Joe Fugle of Fort St. James, who will also be competing in this year's talent show.

"It was such a great night and everyone had such a good time that we thought we'd do it again this year," said Kranz. "We're looking for people who are willing to get up and sing in public, have some fun and not take it too seriously. This is not a serious or heavy competition. No pressure."

There will be a back-up band available for the singers and after the competition everyone will be able to jam for the rest of the evening.

"Everyone will get a chance to sing and then there will be a bit of a break while the judges decide the top five," said Kranz. "After the top five sing again the top three winners are announced."

During the break when judges make their final decisions, Laurie Meier, last year's winner, will entertain the audience.

Each contestant should prepare three songs for the contest, Kranz suggested.

Because the event is sponsored by Mardi Gras Snow Daze there are small prizes given to each of the top three winners as a token of appreciation for their efforts.

"It's more about getting together and having a fun night during Snow Daze," said Kranz.

Since the original judges did such a good job last year, they've already been asked back and happily accepted their duties.

Pam Kranz, well-known a capella singer in the community, Allan Thorp, a local accordion and harmonica player and Citizen associate news editor, Ashley MacDonald-Venis, will take their places as Idol judges.

"Everyone should come on out to the Senior Idol, it's going to be a lot of fun," Kranz said.

Tickets to watch the show are $8 each and are available at the Elder Citizens Recreation Centre (ECRA, 1692 Tenth Ave. To participate registration deadline is Feb. 4. For more information call 250-561-9381.
