Selen Alpay receiving honorary degree from UNBC Friday

UNBC will grant 843 credentials during graduation events held in five northern B.C. communities this week and next.

The skies are expected to clear for the sun and the rain should give way to a warm summer day Friday for UNBC’s 30th convocation ceremonies in Prince George.

There will be two ceremonies in Prince George on Friday. At the 9 a.m. event at the Northern Sport Centre, Secwépemc leader and world-renowned poet Garry Gottfriedson will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree while Ahmad Jalil will receive the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Inclusion, Democracy and Reconciliation.

During the second convocation starting at 1:15 p.m., Canadian Tire owner and philanthropist Selen Alpay will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, Annie Pumphrey will receive the Governor General’s Gold Medal for outstanding academic achievement at the graduate level, and Anthony Preston will receive the Governor General’s Silver Medal, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement at the undergraduate level.

UNBC will grant 843 credentials during graduation events held in five northern B.C. communities, coming close to the 895 credentials granted in 2009. The other ceremonies are on May 29 in Terrace, on May 30 at the Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute, on June 1 in Quesnel and June 2 in Fort St. John.
