Police have called off the search for a Prince George man who went missing while fishing on Carp Lake last weekend.

Equipment malfunction and severe weather forced the RCMP's underwater recovery team to wait until Thursday to enter the water. And uncertainty over where the man entered the water combined with the size of the lake further complicated the search, according to RCMP.

On Sunday afternoon, 59-year-old man, whose name has not been released at request of his family, jumped out of the boat he and two others were using to retrieve his hat. But he was not wearing a life jacket and by the time the boat had been turned around, the man had disappeared.

The team searched the targeted area identified by witnesses, who provided GPS coordinates. The target area was expanded by 200 meters in all directions however the search was unsuccessful.

"Our team wanted to assist the family by searching for their husband and father so they could have closure," said team leader Staff Sgt. Chris Bergeron.

"Unfortunately, after we assessed the conditions, environmental variables and technical limitations with our sonar equipment, we were unable to continue the search. A recovery under these specific circumstances would be unsuccessful."
