A 32-year-old Prince Rupert man failed to evade police by hiding in the bathroom of a local elementary school late Thursday morning.
That was where Mounties found him after his actions forced the lockdown of Quinson elementary, ending an incident that began at about 11:15 a.m. when a Prince George RCMP traffic section member noticed an uninsured vehicle on Fifth Avenue near Douglas Street.
When the police cruiser's lights and siren were activated, the suspect pulled a U-turn and went through a light at Fifth and Central while heading westbound. In the interest of public safety, the member opted against pursuing the black Pontiac Sunfire, but it was found abandoned at Fifth and Ogilvie.
Witnesses also told police a man and woman left the vehicle and entered Quinson, located in the 200 block of Ogilvie Street.
As a precaution, the school was placed on lockdown while police searched for the two although police believe the man was on drugs and had entered the school to elude police and not to target the children.
The man, whose name was not released, has been issued tickets for six Motor Vehicle Act offences and has had the vehicle impounded for seven days. The woman was not found.
