School District 57 has turned to the courts in an attempt to collect nearly $270,000 in allegedly unpaid fees from a Prince George business that provides recruitment services for its international student program.

In a statement of claim filed Tuesday in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, the school district says that as of Feb. 1, Shecana International Schools Ltd. owes $269,386.87.

Shecana is supposed to pay the school district $9,850 per full-time student, $123.13 per week for each student enrolled on a short-term basis and $1,000 per student enrolled as a cultural exchange student on a semester-to-semester basis, according to the claim.

No breakdown of how many students the amount allegedly owed represents is provided in the claim.

Shecana has not yet filed a response and the allegations have not yet been tested in court.
