Crime prevention and community policing initiatives got a financial boost today, after a record-setting garage sale.
A one-time fundraiser was held by the Sandman Hotel and the proceeds - $11,000 - were donated to the Community Policing Centre for efforts like Block Watch, Elder Abuse Prevention, Citizens On Patrol, Speed Watch, anti-bullying, anti-drug, anti-vandalism, anti-gang and similar programs.
Each year the Sandman holds a major garage sale, with the funds raised handed over to a community cause. This year the focus was the downtown office (Sixth Avenue and Brunswick Street) where so many crime prevention and community safety initiatives are headquartered. This year's total beats the previous record by $1,000.
"The Sandman Hotel Community Involvement Days is our way to give back to the community," said David Richinski, Sandman Hotel Manager. "The garage sale is organized by a very dedicated group of employees who volunteer their time and work long hours to ensure the success of the sale."
Dianne Sears, Community Policing Co-ordinator, said "the garage sale was a huge endeavour for Sandman Hotel employees, and also Community Policing volunteers and staff, who all helped make the sale a huge achievement."
The event was held June 4 and 5, with the cheque handed over to Prince George Community Policing Centre personnel today.
