It's OK to turn off the news every now and then during these coronavirus pandemic times and look for something positive to focus on for a while.

The Salvation Army began an initiative called the Hope Heart Health challenge where people are encouraged to post photos and videos showcasing a healthy practice, an act of hope or an act of heart towards community.

"The whole idea is to tell the good news stories that are happening in this community and to collect them under the HopeHeartHealth hashtag so that we can help people realize and recognize that yeah, these are trying times but at the end of the day we're going to get through it together and we're going to get through it well because we're caring for each other and here are practical stories about how we are caring for one another in the community," Major Neil Wilkinson said.

He encourages people to stay connected with others in the community by adding the #HopeHeartHealth when doing good deeds, he added.

So far there's been some graffiti on a church that's been painted over by three youth, a woman made masks and then donated them, another woman dropped off groceries to someone in self-isolation, a birthday car parade took place and many others.

On the website, there are tools to make it easy to use the hashtag.

"We've even got lawn signs that people can put out," Wilkinson said.
