The Central Interior Logging Association and the B.C. Forest Safety Council are hosting a lunch this month to share the latest views on getting forestry professionals home safe at the end of their work day.
"World-renowned safety experts SAFEmap International will share with you seven delusions that impact safety performance," said a joint statement from the two forestry agencies.
Presenter Marius Jacobs said part of the problem is a corporate culture of safety that does not translate into practical safety measures in the field. The good intentions do not always link with the realities of working in the bush.
"Organizations are like the Titanic," he said. "Our delusions let us enter dangerous waters at full speed, ignoring obvious signs of potential disaster. The talk will help create an understanding of these seven delusions: control, compliance, consistency, human error, predictability, statistical trends and invincibility.
"The seven delusions are not readily visible in an organization, mostly because there are no mechanisms from inside to identify them," Jacobs added. "The problem is that role players such as managers, supervisors and employees all have a vested interest in positive safety outcomes, positive trends and good news about safe work performance."
Sailing through the dangers of safety delusion will happen Nov. 23 at the Signature Sandman Hotel. The presentation and discussion runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes lunch.
Space is limited, so the organizing agencies call for RSVP by Nov. 20. Secure spots by calling 1-877-324-1212 or emailing [email protected].
