A runaway vehicle forced the evacuation of two homes in Quesnel on Thursday after it tore through the gas line into one of the homes.

Shortly after 1 p.m. RCMP, the Quesnel Fire Department and Fortis B.C. were called to the 400 block of Allard Street in Quesnel after a parked, unoccupied vehicle rolled down a steep grade driveway. The vehicle rolled between two homes, but struck the gas meter on one of the houses.

The vehicle continued rolling out of control down an embankment, smashed through a retaining wall and stopped in the backyard of a home.

"It is extremely fortunate that no one was injured during this incident," Quesnel RCMP spokesperson Const. Krista Vrolyk said in a written statement. "The presence of children's toys on the deck of one of the affected residences, makes it very clear how lucky we were that no one was hurt in this incident."

The incident is under investigation, and police are working to determine if a mechanical issue with the vehicle caused it to begin rolling.
