How fast can a group of second-year medical students run?

Give them a chance to improve Prince George seniors and you can see for yourself this Sunday.

The seventh annual Hart Half-Marathon/ stats Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Hart Community Centre and second-year students in the Northern Medical Program (NMP) at UNBC will use the race to raise money for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation's Senior Wellness Fund.

"Seniors are often overlooked when it comes to funding that more typically goes to areas such as pediatrics or cancer care, and we felt that this was an excellent way to give back to the community that has offered us so much during our medical training," said second-year NMP student Lindsay Benoit.

Medical students in past years have used the event to collect money for the NMPs rural fund to help subsidize the costs second-year students incur while filling summer electives in rural northern B.C. communities. Last year, the money went to the New Hope Society.

The race includes several events -- a one-kilometre walk, a 5km walk/run, 10km walk/run and 21km run.

The cost to enter is $10, if participants pre-register on-line at www.stridenandglide.ca, or $15 on race day. Racers are asked to show up a half-hour before the start to receive race bibs and timing chips.
