New bus shelters being installed in city after heated units removed

The older models were taken out due to costs and concerns over vandalism

Anyone looking to catch a bus on Fifth Avenue or Austin Road might have noticed a suspiciously empty space where the new heated shelters once were.

The City of Prince George has confirmed that three shelters along these roads have been removed due to concerns over cost and vandalism. They will soon be replaced with new shelters.

While the original shelters had push-button on-demand heat available, these new ones will be standard Pattison shelters and will not be heated.

“It was part of the agreement that we have with Pattison," said Claire Thwaites, communications manager at the City of Prince George. “Around 31 of them got upgraded last year and part of the agreement was that they would also add a couple of new ones every year. These three, the two on Fifth and the one on Austin Road in the Hart, are just the first ones that are being replaced.”

The new bus shelters will be put into place next week after the long weekend.
