A series of roundtable sessions on the proposal to give that school that will replace Kelly Road Secondary School a name from the area’s Indigenous language are no longer on the schedule.
A day after the dates had been sent, the four gatherings that had been scheduled for April have been cancelled, the school district said Friday, due to the corona virus pandemic.
"We believe it is our role and responsibility during this time to support the Provincial Health Officer's strategy of social distancing, and prioritizing the health and well-being of our students, staff and public," school board chair Tim Bennett said.
The public engagement process will be limited to a questionnaire to be available both online and in paper form, from March 20 to April 17.
School district superintendent Anita Richardson has said the questionnaire will provide open-ended questions to allow respondents to provide options related to the proposal to name the new school Shas Ti Secondary School. Shas ti means “grizzly trail” in the Dakelh language used by the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation.
A final decision on the proposal will be made at the April 28 trustees' meeting.
