Robberies yield jail time

A 19-year-old man was sentenced to 428 days in jail, in part for robbing a Prince George liquor store.

Edward James Penner was issued the term Aug. 8 in Quesnel provincial court for the Jan. 19 incident in Prince George as well as for a July 2015 robbery in Quesnel.

Regarding the Prince George offence, a masked man entered the BX Pub store near Carney Street and Fifth Avenue and demanded cash.

He made off with cash, cigarettes and beer. The employee wasn't hurt and no weapons were seen.

Penner, who has remained in custody since his arrest, was apprehended the next day after a police determined he was the culprit.

He tried to get away when RCMP spotted him on Victoria Street, flashing a knife and then running down an alley. With the help of a police service dog and handler, he was arrested.

The knife, a small quantity of heroin and a small quantity of methamphetamine were seized.

RCMP said Penner had recently moved to Prince George from the Quesnel area, has "an extensive history with police."
