Roads still pose risk for drivers

Drivers should not let the blue sky and sunshine stop them from driving safely, North District RCMP traffic services Staff Sgt. Pat McTiernan is advising.

Drivers should not let the blue sky and sunshine stop them from driving safely, North District RCMP traffic services Staff Sgt. Pat McTiernan is advising.

Following Thursday's heavy snowfall, the weather took a definite turn for the better on Friday, but the roads remained icy, McTiernan said.

"Within the past hour, a number of traffic services patrol units have reported that motorists are travelling well above the speeds they should be travelling for the road conditions," McTiernan said in a statement issued midafternoon Friday. "On Highway 16 East, between Prince George and Vanderhoof, the roads may seem bare or snow packed, but they are slippery. "

Police are out on area highways, enforcing laws against speeding and other aggressive driving habits and they will also be out on roadblocks looking for drunk drivers.

"While the hustle and bustle of the season sometimes causes rushing around and less attention to driving, if motorists don't slow down, the Christmas budget could be impacted by the traffic violation ticket, resulting from that few seconds of impatience," McTiernan said.

"Make no mistake about it , the enforcement personnel would much rather give you the violation ticket in an attempt to slow you down and prevent the crash, versus meeting your family at the hospital."
