The majority of city residents not currently receiving garbage collection services want to keep it that way.
Nearly 520 residential properties within the city limits don't get curbside pickup and after the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George implemented a $6 fee at the Foothills dump, some expressed concern over their solid waste disposal options.
After public meetings and the return of mail-in ballots, city staff are not recommending any forward motion on expanding garbage collection service to include Cranbrook Hill, Landooz, Old Summit Lake, Sintich Roads, the eastern half of Hofferkamp Road or the west end of Chief Lake Road.
Of the 505 ballots mailed out, 284 were returned with 195 against implementing collection and 89 in favour.
During meetings held Oct. 8 to 10, "residents strongly voiced their contention that they currently manage their solid waste very well, a point administration agrees with," said a report from operations superintendent Bill Gaal. A 51 per cent majority in favour was required for further consideration.
Other concerns included roadside garbage becoming a wildlife attractant, long driveways being problematic and trucks not being able to collect on garbage day since snow removal on rural roads is less of a priority.
