Following a complicated and large scale investigation by the Vancouver Integrated Market Enforcement Team involving a number of victims with financial loss exceeding $10 million, Ian Gregory Thow has been convicted of 20 counts of fraud over $5,000.

Following guilty plea on March 1, Thow was sentenced to an effective jail term of nine years for five counts and seven years for 15 counts of fraud over $5,000 and restitution in the amount of $3.9 million.

"We are pleased with the court outcome as financial crime is a serious matter. This investigation has been lengthy, and very stressful for the victims. I am glad to see a successful conclusion and wish closure for the victims." says Inspector George Pemberton, Officer-in-Charge of the RCMP's IMET.

The team began investigating Thow in the summer of 2005 based on complaints received from investors and the Berkshire Investment Group. Thow was a registered representative and licensed mutual fund dealer who managed the Berkshire office in Victoria, B.C. between January 2003 and June 2005.

Feb. 17, 2009 the offender was charged with 25 counts of fraud over $5,000 and warrant issued for his arrest, and he was arrested the same day by the U.S. Marshals' Fugitive Task Force in Portland, Oregon. On March 3, 2009, he appeared in court in Seattle, Washington and waived his right to an extradition hearing. On March 9, 2009, Thow was turned over to Canadian authorities where he has been in custody since.
