After nearly 20 years, the area's emergency communications system is getting a multi-million-dollar upgrade.

The regional district board approved a plan to do a sweeping revamp of the radio transmission equipment, but instead of spreading the project over three years as was suggested by staff, it will happen over five years to ease the financial burden on taxpayers.
