Regional District of Fraser-Fort George employee Meredith Burmaster was one of four local government employees across B.C. recognized with a certificate of achievement on Thursday.

The B.C. Board of Examiners awarded Burmaster with a certificate in local government service delivery. Burmaster, who works as the community services leader for the district, said the certificate was part of her ongoing professional training and development.

"It was an accomplishment in that it took quite awhile to complete," she said. "I was very enjoyable to take the courses, because we encounter quite a few situations in local government. It just helps you manage the situations which arrise in local government."

Burmaster said she is one of several regional district employees to have received the certification.

On average, the Board of Examiners only awards 25 certificates per year, based on combination of experience and education courses.

In her position with the district, Burmaster works with many community groups to assist them in developing local services such as water and sewer. Her position frequently involves working as a facilitator for community organizations, assisting with applying for grants and providing other help.

"I call myself the first contact for people when residents want to approach the regional district and don't know who to talk to," she said.

The Board of Examiners was established in 1948 under the Local Government Act to promote professional development for local government employees.
