Regional district elects new chairperson

Former vice-chairperson Lara Beckett takes on the leadership of the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has a new chairperson for the first time since 2007.

Former vice-chairperson Lara Beckett, the director for Electoral Area C, was elected to the position of chairperson by acclimation. Beckett served as the vice-chair for four years, prior to accepting the nomination to serve as chairperson.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George board of directors elects a chairperson and vice-chairperson from among the board members annually in November.

Long-serving director Art Kaehn served as chair of the board from 2007 to 2022. Kaehn was nominated to the position of chairperson, but declined the nomination.

Kaehn, the director of Electoral Area E, accepted and was acclaimed to the position of vice-chairperson.

"I want to congratulate you, chair, for running your first meeting," Kaehn said at the end of Thursday's meeting. "It went smoothly."

"I had a good teacher," Beckett said.

Director Bill Empey thanked Beckett and Kaehn for stepping up to provide leadership at the board table

"A big thank you to you and Art, doing a switch up to stay in position as our leaders," he said.

The board was sworn in a ceremony on Wednesday, ahead of its first meeting on Thursday afternoon.
