Recovery centre vote tonight

The second attempt to approve the Northern Supportive Recovery Centre for Women in the Haldi area will wrap up tonight.

The second attempt to approve the Northern Supportive Recovery Centre for Women in the Haldi area will wrap up tonight.

City council will vote during their April 22 meeting on final reading of the official community plan amendment and rezoning to allow a 30-bed residential therapeutic facility at 5877 Leslie Rd.

Third reading of the application was approved with an 8-1 vote following a four-and-a-half hour public hearing March 4, during which the public response was overwhelmingly in opposition.

Members of the Haldi Road Committee, the group of area residents opposed to the proposal said they will be in attendance at the council meeting and will discuss options for legal action afterwards.

The first time the proposal was given the go-ahead by council in 2011, it was overturned by a B.C. Supreme Court justice who ruled the decision was in conflict with the city's official community plan.

The application was resubmitted, this time with an OCP amendment, to the city last September.

PINE VALLEY PROTESTERS RETURN

Council will also hear again from a group of golfing enthusiasts looking to save a city-owned course from the chopping block.

A delegation from Friends of Pine Valley first addressed the mayor and councillors in December, asking them to step back from their discussion of closing and selling the city-owned course.

Through the core services review process, KPMG consultants identified a potential maximum of $17 million from selling and redeveloping the 40-acre property.

A staff report on how that sale would be carried out is still upcoming.
