Get your hands dirty and celebrate Earth Day at REAPS Compost Demonstration Garden Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"Earth Day is a time when the community can come together to celebrate the Earth," said Terri McClymont, executive director of Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society (REAPS).
"We're going to have some recycling challenges here for the adults, and environmental information will be available."
The City of Prince George, the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George and Canfor will be on hand, added McClymont.
"We're going to be talking about water, composting and recycling," said McClymont. "We also have kids' crafts and relay races. We have bubbles and environmental art work, so there's a whole bunch of different things and people can enter draws to win a greenhouse, a composter and a rain barrel."
There's free workshops to create a pallet composter at noon and a pallet planter box at 1 p.m.
There's giveaways while quantities last at the Earth Day celebration including Dilly Bars, freezie treats, bring your own bucket for some compost, and there's even orchids and mini roses and gift cards available.
Residents are encouraged to attend the activity-filled day to also register for the City Wide Spring Cleanup on Sunday that's already seen about 4,400 people register.
Last year more than 1,200 people registered. The significant increase is due to more schools, including secondary schools, registering to clean up their own areas, said McClymont.
Everyone who signs up gets free bags and gloves to get ready to do a little dirty work Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There are 10 different bins located around the city for disposal.
"We've already given out about 2,000 kitchen bags so far but there are still more areas that need some TLC and by registering there won't be any duplicating areas, so we are open late every evening so people can come to register and pick up gloves and bags to help with the clean up," said McClymont.
Participation is really important but so is registration because Pitch In Canada will only provide enough bags for those registered. After participants fill the bag they can post their photo to the Spring Cleanup page on REAPS web site for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to Copper Pig, a local downtown restaurant.
REAPS, located at 1950 Gorse St., will extend its hours of operation Thursday until 6 p.m., Friday until 10 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. or people can also call to register at 250-561-7327 or email [email protected].
