The two branches of the Prince George Public Library are launching the city's summer reading program to keep young people's creative and educational spirits up.
"It's a great way to ensure that kids of all ages and abilities have fun while maintaining or exceeding their reading levels," said library spokesperson Andrea Palmer. "This year's theme - The Great Big Enormous Gigantic Summer Reading Program - will help lead kids through fun summer activities in big ways with great weekly themes. In addition to tracking the books they get through, special events will be going on each week celebrating summer and reading."
Both branches - the one in the Hart Mall and the Bob Harkins building downtown - will simultaneously host a launch party on July 4 starting at 1 p.m. Families can take home reading record on which kids can keep track of the reading they do. There will also be activity stations and information on a global awareness component.
"This summer, just by reading books, kids who record their reading activities with us will support general disaster relief for other children who may be facing huge losses due to natural disasters or other emergencies" Palmer said. "Funds are donated to match reading objectives achieved by our young readers. Your child's small action can help another, with big results."

The summer reading program is for children aged 0 to12 years at both library branches. It's free and drop-ins are always welcome.
Also, as a bonus for being the older ones, the "double digits" kids (10 to 12 years) can take part in SRP Nerf Tag events next week. On the Hart, it happens at 5:30 p.m. on July 3 while the downtown branch will pull the Nerf trigger at 5 p.m. July 4.
