There are many little ways to enhance a child's love of learning and a good start is making books an integral part of their lives.
Literacy Prince George, the Prince George Public Library and the Prince George Citizen partnering on the 2017 Raise-a-Reader campaign.
The national campaign continues to empower children and families with tools to improve their reading skills which will in turn, provide a foundation for lifelong learning offering a better quality of life.
On Wednesday, volunteers, local dignitaries and the UNBC men's soccer team will be sporting bright orange T-shirts at various locations throughout the city asking for cash donations from 7 to 9 a.m.
"All of the money raised stays in the community for literacy focused initiatives," said Kaitlyn Vecchio, Raise-a-Reader coordinator and children's librarian with the Prince George Public Library.
"It really is wonderful because we distribute approximately $20,000 to different literary projects in Prince George."
Volunteers will be eager to greet at locations throughout the city including all Tim Hortons locations, McDonalds, Starbucks, UNBC and CNC.
Since its inception in 2007, the Prince George initiative has distributed over $325,000 to organizations including the Prince George Friendship Centre, Learning Differences Centre of B.C. the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Polaris Montessori School and the Northern B.C. YMCA.
With the support of the Ministry of Education, the campaign has donated more than $5.7 million to non-profit literacy programs, public school and community libraries throughout the province.
