If you were hoping to play catch at a local park today (July 10), it’ll be best to practice inside if you can.

The City of Prince George is closing all of its sports fields and ball diamonds, except for Masich Place Stadium, due to recent rainfall posing a threat to the conditions of the facilities.

This includes everything at Carrie Jane Grey Park, including Citizen Field and Spruce City Stadium, the Prince George Soccer Association Fields, Exhibition Park, and Rotary Soccer Fields among others.

In a statement, the City says the closure stems from efforts to “protect the turf from root damage and to prevent player injury.”

While crews will be monitoring all the fields and diamonds, they don’t expect the closure to be lifted until tomorrow (July 11) at the earliest.

As of 1:30 p.m. today, Environment Canada is forecasting a risk of a thunderstorm this afternoon and evening with as much as 20 mm of rain and a 60 per cent chance of more showers by midnight.

The City says it’ll reopen all facilities “once they are sufficiently dried out.”

More information is available on the City of Prince George website.
