A Quesnel man was behind the wheel during a fatal collision with a pedestrian in the Lower Mainland.

According to Sgt. Peter Thiessen, spokesman for the B.C. RCMP, the incident happened Tuesday at 45 minutes past midnight. The incident happened on Highway 7 (Lougheed Highway) near Ruby Creek just west of Hope.

"The single vehicle involved in this collision was a fully-loaded 2010 Kenworth commercial vehicle pulling two trailer loads of lumber," Thiessen said. "This vehicle was operated by a 40-year-old male from Quesnel and had been travelling westbound on the Lougheed Highway when a pedestrian ran across the roadway in front of him. The driver of the Kenworth attempted to take evasive action however, and the pedestrian was subsequently struck in the westbound lane of the roadway."

The pedestrian, a 20-year-old male from Hope, succumbed to his injures at the scene. His name will not be released pending permission from his family.

"The preliminary investigation reveals that weather and road conditions do not appear to have been contributing factors in this collision," Thiessen said.

Fraser Valley RCMP Traffic Services, the office of the provincial coroner and the RCMP's Lower Mainland District Collision and Reconstruction Services are continuing their investigation.
