A public consultation meeting on the possible closure of Giscome Elementary has been scheduled at the school for Monday, March 10 at 6 p.m.
At the School District 57 board of education’s Feb. 11 meeting, trustees voted to consider closing the school after administration recommended that it be shuttered at the end of the 2024-25 school year due to a current student population of 10 kids that is expected to drop in the coming years.
Under the district’s policies, the board must pass a resolution indicating it will consider a school closure and then spend at least 60 days thinking it over before making a final decision.
A note posted to the district’s website said that both district staff and trustees will attend the meeting.
“The purpose of the meeting is for district staff to speak to school closure considerations and for individuals to provide feedback to trustees about the potential school closure,” the note said.
Notes taken at this meeting as well as other public feedback will be shared at the Wednesday, April 16 regular board meeting, but the decision on the school’s closure will be made at a special meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 22.
The official public feedback period for the closure is scheduled from March 10 to April 4.
