Public information session set for proposed Prince George Urban Aboriginal Community

Community at 1919 17 Ave. will be developed in phases

The Aboriginal Housing Society of Prince George (AHSPG) has a vision to create an Urban Aboriginal Community.

The project, to be located at the society’s current site at 1919 17 Ave., would provide a family-focused community to support urban Indigenous peoples in Prince George by offering affordable housing and on-site access to education, childcare, health and wellness, recreational and cultural opportunities.

A conceptual master plan has been created and intends to guide development and includes three phases.

Phase One is currently in the design and development stages, which will see townhouses in five buildings, an interior courtyard garden and park and will offer housing in one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units.

As part of the development process, AHSPG has applied for Official Community Plan (OCP) and Zoning Bylaw amendments.

Additional phases will eventually include a childcare facility and community centre, multi-family housing and mixed-use housing.

The project began with community engagement in 2018, and then a co-design workshops in 2019.

It is now continuing with a community open house and public information session before the construction of phase one is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2020.

The public is invited to learn more about the project and the proposed amendments at one of two information sessions to take place Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the AHSPG offices at 1919 17 Ave. at either 11:30 a.m. or 6 p.m.

A key component of the design of the project is a large Outdoor Gathering Space that will be located at the very heart of the site, providing safe play areas for children and will promote community-building among tenants and support multi-generational connectedness through cultural exchange, gardening, and recreation.

Once complete, the community is expected to offer up to 200 units of varying sizes to provide homes for families, singles, and Elders.

You can learn more about the project on the Aboriginal Housing Society of Prince George’s website.
