With a forecast for a warm long weekend, the province is warning campers to be fire safe.
"It's easy to let your guard down coming off a cool and wet spring, but conditions can change quickly at this time of year," said B.C. Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Steve Thomson.
"The fires in northern Alberta are a timely reminder of the devastation fires can cause. Please take this time to learn how to prevent wildfires, and help protect your family, community and B.C.'s forests this summer," he asked British Columbians.
The ministry noted that nearly half of all wildfires at this time of year result from human activity. Since April 1, fire crews have responded to 93 fires across the province, 91 of which were caused by people.
Weekend campers are reminded that camp fires cannot be larger than a half-metre wide by a half-metre tall. The public must also create a one-metre clear ring around the fire, and have a shovel and at least eight litres of water nearby.
Open-burning restrictions are in place for the Cariboo, Coastal and Kamloops fire centres, which prohibits the burning of any waste or slash at a size larger than one metre by one metre.
Recently the province stiffened the penalties for breaking a fire ban to $345 per person. If a fire during a ban causes or contributes to a wildfire, a person could be fined up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting costs.
