A 30-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months probation for what police had called a "rare, unprovoked attack" on a teenage boy.
Originally charge with aggravated assault, Moses Clifford Julian Johnson was issued the term on a lesser count of assault causing bodily harm during an appearance in Prince George provincial court.
Johnson, who was also assessed a $200 victim surcharge on the count and a further $200 on a count of willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, had remained in custody since his arrest, adding up to 213 days.
Johnson was apprehended on the morning of March 10 after RCMP were called to an an assault in progress near Massey Drive and Griffiths Avenue.
They found a 16-year-old boy with a broken nose and Johnson was located a short distance away. Police said he tried to flee on foot and was arrested in the parking lot of a nearby high school.
Police said Johnson had recently moved to Prince George from Hazelton and it appeared he had attacked the youth without provocation.
