Are you a local artist that wants the time and space to explore and showcase your art in a supportive environment? If so, then the Omineca Arts Centre may have the perfect opportunity for you.

Omineca Arts Centre is seeking its next artist-in-residence.

“We have many underrepresented artists in our region that could use the opportunity to further develop and advance their work through an artist-in-residence program,” Omineca explains on its website.

“These artists deserve the opportunity to show their work and engage with a gallery to raise awareness and gain access to other art opportunities they may not be aware of.”

Artist residencies are meant to provide time and space for artists or performers to explore the creative process or focus on a specific project.

For those unfamiliar, Omineca is an interdisciplinary, locally-led artist-run centre that functions as a multi-use facility with weekly programs and special events occurring within the exhibition/studio space.

Omineca’s mission is to facilitate collaboration and diversify opportunities for emerging and professional visual, literary, musical and performing artists.

Any artist of any skill level can apply for the residency. Omineca is looking for artists in varied disciplines with diverse backgrounds including emerging artists who have never exhibited their work, artists who want to participate collaboratively, or professional artists.

So what does an artist residency involve? Well, residencies are one month in duration and the artist will have to provide 20 hours of studio time at Omineca, a three-and-a-half-hour workshop with participants in the community and a two-week minimum exhibition of work.

In return, the artist will get access to the studio, materials required for the workshop, technical and logistical support, volunteer assistance and an honorarium of $1,000.

Omineca’s current artist-in-residence is Otipemisiwak artist Lynette La Fontaine, whose work will be exhibited until March 31. She is also hosting a beading workshop on March 30 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

You can find the Omineca Arts Centre at 369 Victoria St, snuggled in between Margo’s Café and Exit Escape Rooms.

To apply for the residency artists will have to complete the application form, an artist biography, artist statement and a detailed portfolio of work. You can also find out more about the residency, and apply online through Omineca’s website.
