Prince George is home to Canada’s best adult community choir.

That’s according to 2019 National Music Festival, who awarded first place to Nove Voce in the adult community choir category.

A recording of the 27-voice women’s choir from February’s Prince George and District Music Festival was submitted for consideration at both provincial and national competitions.

The choir was also recognized as the best overall choir at the 2019 Performing Arts B.C. Festival.

“It is an honour to work with this amazing group of women,” says Robin Norman, Nove Voce’s Choir Director in a news release. “They have worked extremely hard this year to achieve choral excellence and to represent women and the north.”

Nove Voce believes in supporting and performing music by female and Canadian composers.

Both of the pieces performed by the choir for this festival were written by Canadian composers.

One of which was called Tabula Rasa.

This piece was co-written by Allison Girvan, who spent most of her childhood and youth living in Prince George.

This win also comes just a few weeks away from the choir’s departure for their first out-of-country competition.

On Aug. 1, they will be travelling to Gothenburg Sweden to compete in the Grand Prix of Nations and the Fourth European Choir Games.
