Prince George’s Northern FanCon hosting free virtual events over originally-scheduled weekend

Sixth annual convention remains postponed to September 2020 by COVID-19

You still have to wait over four months to celebrate science fiction, fantasy and pop culture in Prince George.

However, Northern FanCon has decided to take advantage of the virtual world to host a set of free online events this weekend, May 8 to 10, which was when the sixth annual convention was originally scheduled to take place.

As the COVID-19 pandemic forced the three-day gathering to postpone to September this year to account for physical-distancing measures, the committee is inviting local and regional residents to watch and participate in a number of live-streams.

Though the videos will be free, FanCon is also hoping to fundraise some money for the most vulnerable during the crisis.

On its website, an option will be added for residents to ‘pay what you can’ and all the proceeds will be earmarked for the United Way of Northern BC.

According to FanCon, the streams will include roundtable discussions for artists, aspiring filmmakers and cosplayers.

More announcements are scheduled for this week leading up to Friday’s (May 8) virtual kick-off.

You can find information and updates on Northern FanCon’s website.

The actual convention is scheduled for Sept. 25 to 27, which will mark a year since the community crowdfunded more than $103,000 to make the sixth installment possible.
