Wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby are just a few of the adapted sports you'll get to try out at Prince George's upcoming Multi-Sport Day.
On Saturday, June 22, everyone will have the chance to come down to Masich Place Stadium and Carrie Jane Gray Park and try different adaptive sports.
“There’s going to be a whole bunch of adaptive supports and it’s open for everyone in the community to try,” says Brandy Stiles, who works at Spinal Cord Injury B.C. and is one of the organizers of the event. “It’s totally inclusive. A big part of that is for people to get some more awareness of different adaptive sports available in the community and just to see what it’s like.”
Stiles says sometimes people are surprised to find out that many of the adaptive sports available to play in Prince George are integrated with able-bodied people playing alongside those with disabilities.
“It’s really open to everybody regardless of ability. We want people to come and get to know more about what other sports opportunities there are in our community.”
Multi-Sport Day is completely free and requires no registration, you’ll just have to check in when you arrive to check out the sports.
There will be sports and activities for both adults and children.
Stiles says when participants check in, they will get a passport they can use at each station.
Once they’ve completed their passport and tried all the sports, they can enter it in for a draw to win some great prizes.
B.C. Wheelchair Basketball’s Let’s Play Program will have activities for younger children, and author of the X-tails books Larry Fielding will be onsite with his new colouring book, Explore Adaptive Sports from A to Z.
Marni Abbot-Peter, who is one of the premier wheelchair basketball players in the world with three Paralympic gold medals, will also be on hand to share her passion about adaptive sports with the community.
“This is an opportunity to reach out to the broader Prince George and say come and check it out,” says Stiles. “It’s a good thing for Prince George to celebrate adaptive sports and inclusive community.”
Multi-Sport Day will take place on Saturday, June 22 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Masich Place Stadium and the Carrie Jane Gray Park basketball and tennis courts.
