A local establishment was trying to do a good deed for a young Prince George girl, but the actions of one person have ruined it.

Prince George Recycling and Return-It Centre Manager Ken Ziemer says a man was caught on camera at 4 a.m. on Monday (Jan. 14).

The man broke into donation bins at the centre and stole beverage containers that were meant for 14-year-old Kyra Edgson, who is currently fighting leukaemia.

Her family is making multiple trips back and forth to Vancouver, and this donation cycle was being given to the family.

Ziemer says the bins will be repairable, but that isn't the main concern.

"The bins will be repairable with some welding and fabrication work," he tells PrinceGeorgeMatters.

"It is certainly frustrating though to be trying to help out in the community and then have people damaging the bin to steal from them."

He says it appears the man used some sort of tool to cut the steel hasp that the lock was attached to.

The centre has released a video of the suspect and is asking the public for help in identifying him.

"It is a pretty sad situation that it comes to this," Ziemer says.
