Prince George Spruce Kings’ Mason Waite off to New York for 2021 college hockey

Defenceman signs with St. Lawrence Saints at NCAA Division One level

After he plays his final year of junior ‘A,’ Mason Waite will head further east than his hometown of Winnipeg for the next step of his hockey career.

The Prince George Spruce Kings’ defenceman has decided to join the St. Lawrence University Saints for the 2021-2022 campaign, an NCAA Division One hockey program in northeast New York.

The 20-year-old notched 29 points in 51 games during his first BCHL stint after being acquired by the Kings in September 2019 in a trade with the Lloydminster Bobcats.

This included seven goals, the most among Prince George blue-liners, and 22 assists while also adding a point in four playoff games.

Head Coach Alex Evin is thrilled to see one of his older players be rewarded for his efforts.

“We are very proud of Mason Waite and he is very deserving of this achievement,” said Evin in a team statement.

“Since joining our team last Fall, he has worked very hard to improve each and every both on and off the ice.”

Waite was named the co-defenceman of the year for the 2019-20 Spruce Kings.

St. Lawrence plays in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) in NCAA action.

The school finished last in the 12-team division last year with a record of 2-18-2 and hasn’t won a conference championship since 2001.
