Prince George Senior's Care being overhauled

Northern Health has undertaken an initiative to redesign the way senior's care is delivered in Prince George.

The Prince George Leadership team has developed a project plan and structure to look at all services for seniors, both at the primary care level and within specialized programs and services, across all parts of the organization.

"The process is just getting started and it won't be completed for some time," said Anne Chisholm, Northern Health director, community and residential services - Prince George.

Within Northern Health, seniors currently receive care in various sectors, primary care, acute carte, mental health and addictions, community and residential and public health. The overall goal of the initiative is to provide a more integrated system of care for seniors in the community, improving the health of seniors and enabling seniors to live independently as long as possible and enhancing seniors's experience with the medical programs.

Part of the work will consider the supports Prince George based services provide to other areas across the north.

The approach being taken for the work comes in three stages: To identify the strengths and shortcomings of current system, design a more integrated system that also utilizes existing resources and to identify and implement actions to close the gap.

The process will also require feedback related to seniors care in Prince George.

"We have also identified a small team who will work together, and on behalf of the whole system, to identify a more integrated and effective system," said Chisholm.

Local agencies, including the Prince George Council of Seniors will be involved in the project.
