Impaired driving appears to be an action Prince George is simply not understanding, according to RCMP.

Between Dec. 9 and Sunday (Dec. 15), police say they caught 65 instances related to impaired driving during its CounterAttack campaign in the city, using approved screening devices, physical coordination testing, and a drug recognition expert during the process.

As a result, violations included the following:

  • 25 Motor Vehicle Act violation tickets
  • 20 vehicles impounded
  • Five prohibited drivers
  • Four 24-hour driving prohibitions (alcohol)
  • Three 24-hour driving prohibitions (drug)
  • Three 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions (IRPs) with 30-day vehicle impound
  • Three 3-day IRPs
  • Two Criminal Code impaired driving investigations

Over its launch weekend, officers nabbed 22 violators.

"Despite our best efforts to warn drivers that our officers will be out in full force, some people still choose to drive while impaired,” Cpl. Craig Douglass said in a release.

“Everyone else should be aware of this and be extra cautious while utilizing our roadways."

December is provincial CounterAttack month and RCMP say they'll be continuing enforcement throughout the holidays and into 2020.

Prince George Mounties stress that the public’s actions could save lives and advise anyone who sees an impaired driver or somebody about to get behind the wheel while under the influence to call 9-1-1 immediately.
